Project 1
Exploring the Environmental Poetics
"Taylor's Gateway"
The first project explores the environmental poetics of a structure that respond to the basic natural context such as the sun, wind, heat, cold, energy issue, and the existing context. In a group of 3, students are required to design a structure within an open area applying ideas of environmental sustainability in architectural design. The main purposes of the structure should be of providing both shelter and suitable environment for users.
The objectives of this project are as follows
1. Identify and analyze environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site
2. Apply ideas of environmental sustainability which is obtained from precedent studies, ESD and Building Science 1, in architectural design
3. Employ particular material and construction technique
The tasks are divided into three stages namely, design analysis, problem solving and resolving design. Students first understand the site by investigating then given site, which is in Taylor's University. Then, by understanding students' need in the institution, an idea is produced and concept is developed.
This project calls for a design of a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design. It explores design solutions that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users. Students explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users.
Objectives
1. To develop awareness of environmental sustainability in architectural design.
2. To develop the student’s ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs, as well as make poetry with the buildings.
The first part of the Project 2 is to conduct a site analysis of the site of second part, Pulau Banding. Pulau Bnading is an man-made island located within the Temenggor Lake in Perak. Strategically located in the middle of the East-West Highway, it is also a pit stop right before the great Belum Rainforest.
Project 2
NATURE APPRECIATION CENTRE
"GATEWAY TO ROYAL BELUM"
The site is located in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak. Pulau Banding is a 243-hectare man-made island located within the majestic Temenggor Lake. The Island sits amidst the 130 million year-old Royal Belum Rainforest, known for nature based activities such as fishing, bird watching, camping and visiting orang asli settlements.EMKAY Group, the owner and caretaker of the Island, envisions the development of Banding Island as a vital introduction to Royal Belum State Park and aims to position it as a premier heritage destination on the world ecotourism map. It operates the Belum Rainforest Resort that offers opportunity to get up close and personal with the natural world.

This project requires students to propose a facility accommodating several related functions such as exhibition, learning and recreation in a suburban context. Students are to develop their own concept for the design based on their research of the area and environment. This working method is intended to have the student design in near full-freedom; however they will be required to make an informed response firstly to the surrounding context. Their capacity to respond architecturally and contextually to this task will form part of the basis upon which they will be marked.
Inspired from personal site perception and also the pillbox, a significant trademark in Pulau Banding, I developed a concept of 'Protection'. From the concept and the results of site analysis, through developments and improvements, I created this Nature Appreciation Centre (NAC). This NAC blends well with the surrounding and context, have nursery as a special programme to attract tourist especially nature lovers. Constructed using timber, glass and steel, this structure sits quietly above the ground creating minimal disturbance to the nature at the same time providing maximum exposure the the surrounding.
After completing this project, I am able to apply ideas of environmental sustainability in my design. I have successfully designed and created architectural spaces with consideration of environmental poetics in relation to the basic natural context and existing built context which impact on users’ experiences. In order to do so, I combined the environmental needs, the site (site topography, history and socio-cultural events), and the users’ experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context. Not only that, I am able to produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling and verbal presentation to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.
Merging 3 components together, a vertical paintball arena, a security tower and an outdoor leisure space, my group created this "Gateway to Taylor's". Striking and stands out on a field, drawing public to it.
